Hawthorn has long been a sacred tree; it was said to have been used for Jesus’ crown of thorns. The Anglo-Saxons built barriers with it to contain their livestock; they called it haege, which is the origin of the English word hedge.
Medicinally, the flowers and berries are used as a restorative tonic for the heart.  Here is an old remedy to cure a broken heart:  Steep the flowers in brandy for 7-10 days, strain and bottle.  Take 7 drops morning and evening.  - Sarah Walters
